well, from the threads on the forum, there seems to be a recruitment drive for PCSO's in Essex, i guess you'd have to move if it's your chosen career and nowhere local is recruiting. sorry I can't be any more help.
Well, Im 18 yrs old iv done 2 years A levles for Uniformed Public services and am now looking to become a PCSO asap. I currently live in West Yorkshire but they are having the current Recruiment freeze and im pretty lost now.
Hi fellow pcso's, I'm about to start my sixth week, I've passed all the exams apart from the last knowledge check so I feel really fed up. Does anyone know whether there is a website which may have the multiple choice exam questions that I can practice to so that I pass the final stage exams. blueyes

Yes, I suppose you could say it is true, however you dress it up, we are policing on the cheap, but I think it adds vastly to the police force (notice I put force, not service) with completely different types of people, from different backgrounds and different past careers, not all just stereo-type coppers. People who actally have time for the public, not just want to nick them
I think the public perception of us would improve if they could see cuffs hanging off our belts

I know my trainng sergeant used to come on here, although I've never worked out who he is, as he was the one that made me shut down my training diary, as it had been seen by him, and some people at Hendon, whooops!!!

who knows? I've been involved in several incidents where I've assisted PCs in cuffing people, although never had to actually cuff myself, but who knows what might happen
There isn't a thread, I'll find out more tomorrow when I go back to work (been off all week). The training is purely in case it's needed in day to day operations
there must be discussion AT the OST training about WHY PCSOs receive cuffing/ ASP training TC

It's been like that for some time, apart from the three of us that started on our team at the same time, everyone else has already done it
Yes, when we do our on borough OST, they teach you how to cuff and how to use an asp, and other stuff as well I believe. Just in case you have to do it at some point when with a PC. Or if in the middle of a "bundle", an asp falls to the floor. There's always the chance. I think this should be part of the mandatory training.

Some of my colleagues often say things like "It's pretty good money for what we do". I suppose you could say Fireman, nurses etc should get more. I wouldn't be a prison oficer for all the tea in China
Yes, I really think so. When you're 20, and all of a sudden you're earning £25K for what some see as just "walking around" it's quite an attractive draw. For myself with a wife, child and mortgage, it's not so good. I took a pay cut to do the job. But, for the first time in my life, I love going to work
As for training, I do think we should be taught more self defence, cuffing etc. I know when we do our Borough OST, they give us cuffing and Asp training, but I haven't had that yet. I would have liked to learn more about law too, which I have picked up along the way, a lot of it, thanks to this Forum I have to say
Exactly, I do think some are on a power trip, and especially the money. Some on my training, in fact most of them, had worked in shops previously, on about 12-14 grand, something like that, all of a sudden they are given a few powers, a uniform and £25K. There are at least 3 members of my STT team that are 19, and although they do act professionally on the street, I always look at them and think, no you shouldn't really be doing this
yeah and that is something the people under that age simply CANNOT ever appreciate until they get above that age
Yes definately, I think life experience plays a huge part. I often think that some of the PCSOs I come into contact with are far too young, and coppers for that matter. I really think the age should be 21

I do like coming to the site, but I do get annoyed, and really have to bite my tongue from time to time. I can't really think of how it could be improved, although it would be nice to get some more members. The only thing that I think should be changed is the time, it's always an hour ahead!

certainly do. I always say that, as I call them "uniformed social workers" are also part of the role, and that I am never critiising them for what they do, there is a part for that type of PCSO too
you are criticised because you get involved - well sod the criticism - all PCSOs ARE different, from what I see you certainly give value for money that's for sure
Of course not, everything I have commented on, Specials or otherwise, has been from my personal experience. I have realised that there are many different types, but I am critisised because I get involved, and do things that others deem "not in their remit"
your posts show more than anything that every PCSO out there is different, one is a stand back and report in PCSO - another is a lay hands on the bloke "I'm using my citizen's power of arrest" kind of guy and yet another PCSO is somewhere in the middle of these
I haven't had particularly good experience of them. I've had to get involved when a hole group have been standing around, not knowing what to do, including a sergeant, and had to tell them what to do, the list of experiences, all bad goes on and on. The way I look at it, whatever you do for a living, if you only do it for 16 hours a month, you're not going to be very good at it
Your crusade against specials on this site, has actually been a pleasure to view, not least for the fact that it has brought many many members to the immediate DEFENCE of specials!! it really has been amazing
yes I suppose so, I seem to make quite inocuous (spelt wrong) statements, and I am then jumped on. I don't hide my contempt for Specials, I would be lying if I said I liked them, or their role. Obviously it's nothing personal against them, just the role

Hi, Guys, I was wondering whether I have free travel as a PCSO on Croydon tramlink....since I have a free bus pass for London busses and the tramlink is using a bus pass as well, is there any chance for the tram to be free as well as the busses?

all PCSOs across the UK should strongly consider joining a union. MET PCSOs largely join the PCS union.
All other PCSOs should really join UNISON
If you are already in a union think about encouraging others to consider this issue
