Life should mean life for anyone convicted of killing a police officer
Mrs May said the Government is to propose that the starting point for anyone convicted of the murder of a police officer in the line of duty should be increased to whole life without parole from a current minimum of 30 years.

Receiving a round of applause from officers in attendance, Mrs May said: “The murder of a police officer is a particularly appalling crime.

“To attack and kill a police officer is to attack the fundamental basis of our society.”

She added: “That is why I can announce today that, subject to consultation with the Sentencing Council, the Government will change the law so that the starting point for anybody who kills a police officer should be a life sentence without parole.

“We are clear – life should mean life for anyone convicted of killing a police officer.”

There have been 12 direct killings of police officers in the course of duty since 2000 – including the murder of Pcs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes by Dale Cregan in Greater Manchester last year

R.I.P Nicola and Fiona

Two unarmed female police officers PC Nicola Hughes, 23, and PC Fiona Bone, 32, were killed in a gun and grenade attack in September in Greater Manchester, which led to the arrest of a wanted man. We pay our respects to these brave officers.
