Hello All

I had my second proper day on the job Yesterday, Sunday 7 May, and already got verbal abuse from people in cars(a guy in his BMW X5 esp), glass bottles thrown at me by cowards in the pub who then ran away, Lots of Youths Causing Annoyance, and all on my second day.

I hope it gets better. I intend to get projects and initiatives going in the area and get myself known, but I wonder if people even want me there. (We are the first CSO's there)

But alas, I'll give it my best shot. Do lots of you get the same all the time?

Hi garfs,

I know that getting grief so quickly is not pleasant, but at least you have already seen and understood the down side of the job.

You will always get days like this, but the vast majority will be better, especially as you get to know more people.

Ignore the people that give you grief, as best you can, but always be ready to take car indexes of abuse hurlers. Our force follows them up and gives them a warning.

You will stop feeling down, and begin to enjoy the job before too long.

Keep posting, and good luck to you.

Hi Everyone

Thanks for all the replies and encouragement.

I guess I knew the abuse was definately going to come so I should just get over it. I'm in again this week so hopefully I'll be able to go and get myself known to different members of the community.

I'll keep people posted on how I get on if you like.

All the best

Remember there is something as section 5 public order offence so you do not have to take lots of abuse. I don't know your area but I spent some time crewed with the regs to get to know them and now they know me they are happy to turn out and help when I have a problem. Mind you they would turn out and help if the didn't know you in our area.

Get to know the problem makers, if you treat them well they will give you respect and lots of intel, which is what the game is about!

Use your radio, and also patrol with other PCSO's become part of the team.... Rolling Eyes God, I sound like one of thoes awful motivator seminars!

Best of all do not give up.

The one requirement not mentioned in the PCSO role profile - Thick Skin required.
Stick at it, you may be new at it but remember that you are also new to the public in your area. Its a case of getting to know them and them you. Have a sharp eye and a sharp pencil and an open ear.

I had a six month settling in period with the same kind of treatment as a PCSO because we were the first deployed in the area.

Hi Garfs,

I'm sorry you're having a rough time of it at the moment Crying or Very sad

After a while you won't even notice some of the ignorant people out there, it will go straight over your head. It's horrible at first and we as human beings shouldn't have to endure that sort of behaviour Twisted Evil

I'm lucky that in 2 and half years I only had the odd comment and didn't suffer like you seem to be suffering. Just lucky I suppose Confused

People will get used to seeing you on the streets and before you know it they'll be pleased to see you around. Promise! Hang on in there Wink
